  • December 11, 1858:   He and Jadu Nath Bose became the first two Indians to be conferred the Bachelor of Arts degree from Calcutta University.
  • 1859:   He was appointed as Deputy Collector soon after he passed his graduation examination.
  • 1865:   His first Bengali romance, Durgeshnandini, was published in 1865.
  • 1891:   He continued to work in government service till 1891 when he got retired.

  • Author of India’s National Song 'Vande Mataram', originally a Bengali and Sanskrit stotra personifying India as a mother goddess and inspiring the activists during the Indian Freedom Movement.
  • He got married when he was just 11 years old and his wife was only 5 years old.
