A spring Hindu festival that celebrates the birthday of
god Rama.
The festival is a part of the spring Navratri.
It is celebrated on Shukla Paksha Navami (9th day) of
Chaitra (1st month).
While many devotees fast throughout the nine days of
navratri, some make it a point to commit themselves to
fasting and praying on the last day that is, ... Rama
Navami.
Ram Navami is celebrated on the last day of the
nine days long Navarati celebration.
Along with Lord Rama, the mother of Lord Rama, i.e. Mata
Kaushalya, the father of Lord Rama i.e. King Dasharatha, the
wife of Lord Rama i.e. Devi Sita, three younger brothers of
Lord Rama i.e. Bharata, Lakshmana and Shatrughna and the
ardent devotee of Lord Rama i.e. Bhakta Hanuman are also
worshipped on this auspicious day.
The simplistic and most common way of observance of this
day can be described as under:
a day long fast;
worshipping Lord Rama;
listening to or narrating the epic Ramayana;
performing ceremonial wedding of Lord Rama and
Goddess Sita;
conducting Rama Navami procession; and
performing Hawan before breaking the fast on the
next day.
