- 1926: He became a member of
the Congress Working Committee.
- 1932: He was arrested for
conducting India's independence day celebrations and spent
six months in prison.
- 1936: In the municipal body
elections, he was elected to the Madras City Corporation and
served as Deputy Mayor.
- 1937: He was elected in the
Madras Assembly elections.
- 1944: He was elected to the
Constituent Assembly of India.
- 1946: He was re-elected in
the Madras Assembly elections.
- March 24, 1947: He took
over as Minister of Public Works and Planning (Madras
Presidency).
- April 06, 1949: He retired as
Minister of Public Works and Planning (Madras Presidency).
- August 1963: He, along with the
then Union Minister for Cultural Affairs, Humayun Kabir,
strongly opposed
M.S.
Golwalkar's proposal to construct a rock memorial at
Kanyakumari in order to honour Swami Vivekananda on his
birth centenary. But later they yielded to the majority
support of the parliamentarians in this regard.
- October 02, 1963: He became the
Chief Minister of the Madras State.
- Match 07, 1964: He recommended
the introduction of a three-language formula comprising
English, Hindi and Tamil.
- February 13, 1965: He claimed
that the opposition DMK and the Left parties were
responsible for the large scale destruction of public
property and violence during the anti-Hindi agitations of
1965.
- March 06, 1967: He retired as
the Chief Minister of the Madras State.
