Full Name JUNAGADH, Gujarat, India.
Description During partition of British India of 1947, the 562 princely states were given a choice of whether to join the new Dominion of India or the newly formed state of Pakistan or to remain independent.   The Nawab of Junagadh, Muhammad Mahabat Khanji III, decided that Junagadh should become part of Pakistan, much to the displeasure of many of the people of the state, an overwhelming majority of whom were Hindus.   Although the territory of Junagadh was geographically not adjoining the existing Pakistan, it had a link by sea through the Veraval Port of Junagadh.   On 9 November, 1947, the Indian armed forces occupied the Junagadh state. And immediately thereafter, the administration of Junagadh was formally handed over to the Indian Government.   A plebiscite was held on 20 February 1948, in which 99% of the population voted to join India.   Literally translated, Junagadh means Old fort.   An impressive fort, Uperkot, was originally built during the Mauryan dynasty by Chandragupta in 319 BCE.   Mohammad Bahadur Khanji I, who owed allegiance to the Sultan of Ahmedabad, founded the state of Junagadh by expelling the Mughal governor and declaring independence in 1748.   In 1807 it becomes British protectorate. The East India Company took control of the state by 1818, but the Saurashtra area never came under the direct administration of British India. Instead, the British divided the territory into more than one hundred princely states, which remained in existence until 1947.   The Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Junagadh was constructed on the land presented by Jinabhai (Hemantsingh) Darbar of Panchala, and dedicated on Friday, 1 May 1828 A.D.
